The play

The play of Jean Racine written in 1664, reconstructs the Roman world of power, integration and corruption. The second wife Agrippina and recent widow of Emperor Claudius, was trying through machinations to lead her son Nero to the throne. Although the natural son of Claudius, Brettanicus, is the official heir to the throne, Agrippina persuades Claudius to give her son the title of the next Roman Emperor. A few weeks later Claudius dies. Nero starts to worship power and estranged from his mother, initiates machinations to conquer Brettanicus's girlfriend, Junia, and threatens his life. Rome is on the razor's edge.
